If you've shopped for resistance tubes, you've seen labels like "10 LBS / 4.6 KG" or "50 LBS / 22.7 KG" printed right on the strap. It's tempting to read these the way you'd read a dumbbell's weight plate — a fixed number. But resistance bands work differently, and understanding the rating system helps you understand what you're actually buying.
How resistance is rated. A resistance tube's labeled number reflects the force required to stretch it to a standardized length — commonly around double its resting (unstretched) length — as measured in controlled testing. This is why the number is described as a "rating" rather than a fixed weight: resistance force increases progressively as the tube stretches further, and decreases as it returns toward resting length. The label represents a reference point along that curve, not a constant.
What determines the rating. Two factors do most of the work: the tube's wall thickness and its outer diameter. A thicker-walled or larger-diameter tube requires more force to stretch, producing a higher resistance rating. Manufacturers often use color coding as a visual shorthand for these ratings, but color conventions aren't universally standardized across brands — the printed number and the tube's actual dimensions are the reliable reference points.
Material matters too
Resistance tubes are most commonly manufactured from one of two materials:
Natural latex — prized for its elasticity and "snap-back" recovery, natural latex has been the traditional material for resistance tubing for decades. It offers a smooth stretch feel but can degrade with prolonged UV or ozone exposure over time.
Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) — a synthetic alternative that is naturally latex-free, making it a relevant option for anyone with a latex sensitivity. TPE tends to have a slightly different stretch feel and is often chosen for its consistency across manufacturing batches.
Why a graduated set exists
A set spanning multiple ratings (in our case, 10 through 50 LBS) exists because a single resistance level can't represent a full range of tube diameters and thicknesses — the graduated system lets each tube serve as one data point in a broader lineup, similar to how a wrench set includes multiple sizes rather than one.
